Star chart SIRIUS (m = 6)

- Chart exterior
The construction of the Star chart
The rotating Star chart serves for orientation in the sky and helps to solve some complex astronomical problems. Front and back of the chart show the northern and southern hemispheres of the sky with an overlap of 54° declination each beyond the celestial equator. The chart records all stars from magnitude -1.6 (Sirius) to +5.5, that is a total of 2796 stars
in 88 constellations.
The Star chart
It consists of a groundsheet in three colours, a rotating, transparent coversheet and a rotating pointer, and shows the firmament as a sphere seen from below. This sphere is represented in the plane with the help of equidistant azimuth projection, as recognizable by the regular (that is towards the edge not growing) declination scale in red colour on the pointer. As a consequence of this kind of projection, the shape of the constellations towards the margin of the chart is somewhat distorted.
